is there any sort of substance that could be painted or applied to the sides of cheaper containers to make them safe for aquaponics |

Interesting question Dan, I'm not sure.... Anyone? I guess that some substances that leach from containers are probably incredibly small gassious particles, that even if you do paint over the container, they will still off gas through the paint...  Maybe....?

I may have the answer there. But what is the containers material first. That is if my brain will work,Suffering and laughing at the same time. Big night to wet babies head, should be enough for the next 6 kids I recon |

I recon, for the mucking around and the non guaranteed performance of any paint on plastic stick to something food grade and you can't go wrong IMHO |

Perhaps a plastic lining? I discovered this weekend, that pine chips (cypress) leach a pink coloured dye into the water that fish dont like

cypress can be really bad stuff. Never put it in a fire (and that means you Steve), the smoke can make you really sick. Cypress trees drop a chemical around the leaf line to exclude other trees from growing anywhere near them. It's no wonder the fish don't like it! |

Jaymie, when burning stuff i use the following do burn and don't burn categories Do burn: Anything that will burn Anything that may burn Anything that when doused with metho gives the impression of burning Don't burn: Money things that will put out the fire people animals

This is going on what my mum told me (a bushie mum) oh and dad too, Cypress gives off an oily black smoke that can cause respiratory problems. I think they also said something about the smoke getting into your food (if you're cooking) and making you sick too. |

You hit the nail on the head Monya, I did a heap of googling for this very thing and the sums just didn't add up. Even if you DO find somthing that will stick to the surface reliably (and any type of plastic makes this difficult) you need to use so much of the stuff that the cost adds up very quickly. |
