I got my shelf built and my pipe installed and glued. Next step is to drill out the holes for the net cups.

I purchased these in 3”

My question is do I drill a 3” hole or should I go a tad smaller? Will the curvature of the 4” pvc pipe make the hole bigger than 3”.

I suppose I could wait until they are delivered and make a test hole but I was hoping to get the holes drilled, cleaned up and get the system cycling.

I remember struggling to get my head around these issues when I started out.

But, if you think about it, the curvature of the pipe is irrelevant to the size of the hole when viewed two dimensionally from above, which is the way you'll put the net pots in.

The size of the hole depends on the diameter of the pipe, how deep the water will be in the pipe and how much of the media in the pot you want in the water.

I use a 2-7/8 hole saw for my 3" pots. They fit snug instead of loose. Also, run the saw in reverse when using on foam or plastic.
