A huge stainless steel maple sap tank came with the house I bought, it used to be a maple sugar house. Not sure of the gallons but it's is about 15'x6' and around 3' deep at its center. Problem is that it's starting to get surface rust. Think it's still safe to use and if so, what would you use to seal it from continuing to rust? |

Hello there frogofages. Are you thinking of using it as a fishtank? If so first make sure it will take the strain of the weight and secondly I would seal it with a pond liner. You don't want any metal in your systems water as it will effect the balance (well a rusting tank will!) I suggest doing a lot of calculating as to how many fish you hope to put in it and then designing the rest of the system on paper before committing. Maybe you've already done a drawing? If so put it here and I'm sure we'll all try and help you get it off to the best start. Good luck. KE |

Marine and industrial supply shops have a paste you can use to pickle and remove rust stains from stainless steel but if its very light you could sand the surface and vacuum it out. A little iron isn't going to hurt, it's the zinc, copper and aluminium that are detrimental to fish health. I have SS grow beds in one system and a SS FT in another with no problem. |
