Hi y'all, In an effort to diagnose a nagging airlock/pump stall problem, I replaced some of my black tubing with clear and I got everything set now. But, while I was hoping there would be enough bubbles/particles to track flow direction, it just looks like it's full of clear water (a good thing, I suppose.) I'd love to install a paddle wheel flow indicator like this ![]() But they are crazy expensive in the sizes I'd need (1/2", 3/4") as they tend to be 'lab grade'. Anyone of our hardware hackers here doing something clever to visualize 2-way flow direction without impeding flow too much? Thanks in advance for any thoughts, and cheers! |

Clear water pipes aren't a great idea, algae will grow on the inside of the pipes unless you block the sun somehow. Can't help with a flow indicator, but then I've always used simple methods to indicate flow, mainly noise of trickling water, when I hear no sound something is wrong. |

try here https://www.adafruit.com/categories/106 specifically https://www.adafruit.com/products/828 ($9.95 inline screw thread flow meter 1/2") guess they may do other sizes. or else try instructables.... http://www.instructables.com search flow meter etc there are also advective outside pipe measuring devices. Re: EB - If you use clear pipe you can always put it in something to block light out. A cheap plastic tool box or something may work. |

A very simple flow indicator is a clear section of pipe with a bit of tinsel or ribbon secured to the inside. When there is flow the tinsel will flap about. You will need a cover over it. A slightly larger section of opaque pipe slip over it should do. As long as there is enough of a straight section to slide the cover away to see the tinsel. |
