Frosty Fish website indicates that not only do any holes in the inside of a fish tank freezer have to be plugged, but that the whole thing has to be painted with the special super duper paint they sell.

What would happen if one didn't?

(Supposing the freezer has a plastic inside, not metal)

I wondered the same thing... Jeremiah (Frosty Fish) is a great guy; I'm sure he would tell you if you asked.

I contemplated the spendy marine grade paint then ended up doing my freezer with truck bed Rhino liner. I chose two different brands for color choice and one of them peeled right away. The other is still holding and no dead fish. I have an aggressive spray bar and there is some algae growth the fish pick on and so far 6 months with no issues. I only painted the inside after sanding and priming the rust spots in the freezer. If no rust I probably would have left it unpainted. I didn't want to mess with a rubber liner.

Frosty Fish got back to me, and Jeremiah said that he didn't know what would happen. He said all of his have needed paint due to rust issues. He said I would have to try it out, which is what I may do. He no longer sells the paint himself.
