I've noticed that my daphnia tanks tend to go anaerobic if left with stagnant water. I'm looking to add some aeration and mix the water around, which also helps reduce mosquito larvae. Daphnia and other zooplankton have a hard time swimming against any kind of current so they would easily get sucked into most kinds of filters. I have seen people using 'sponge filters' which as I understand are essentially airlifts where the intake side pulls water through a large porous foam sponge. Most of them say "Safe for fry fish" and such. Would these work in daphnia tanks? .. What about this.. Take a large drainage pipe... standing on the bottom, and proud of the surface, or have it with a floating collar that will keep it at the same height.. Fill the tube with long brushes, like the Koi people use for filters.. In the centre arrange a small tube as an air-lift/pump that sucks from the bottom and overflows into the big tube and back down and out the bottom... The only fine point might be to close the base and suck from one side at the base and exhaust from the other... .. . |
