I am seriously considering moving from submerged simple biofilter to dry-wet trickle filter, after studying about trickle filter for a while. My only problem is that I am living in an area where there are (not very often) power out. It can last from minutes to one or two hours. I am planning to put the trickle filter inside a big container which also acts as a sump tank for the pump, so, when the power off, the overflow can flow into the container and will keep the bioballs to be at least partially submerged. I assume some of the bioballs will not be fully submerged though. And, in that case the bacteria will die, isn't it? However, I assume it will last at least for a few minutes. Is there information how long will it last? Seconds? 5-10 minutes or longer? One hour?

Apart from that power outage, is there any other negatives from using trickle filter that I need to know?

Thank you.

i think you will be fine, as long as they are moist they will survive. So i would say a good few hours at least, even a few days in the centre of the media.
