I've been reading a fair bit on commercial aquaculture lately and the overwhelming verdict seems to be that EPDM liners are non-toxic and totally harmless to fish and humans as they break down, with a lifespan of roughly 30 years (perhaps more if you can keep the UV off them).

Does anyone know of a source or any anecdotal evidence to the contrary?

If they are ok, they could add a lot of scope to designs and still allow a degree of affordability - at least at a backyard level. 8)

EPDM is the way a LOT of commercial farms are going to deal with problems from their existing concrete ponds and tanks. Even Zebra fish have shown no ill affect to the food grade EPDM liners and paints.

I used it, but there's a leak that's keeping me from finishing my system.. I advise you that if you use it, just fold it, DON'T cut it into shape.

There are two different kinds of EPDM in Holland; the first one is used on roofs and is usually 1.15mm thick, and IT'S TOXIC to aquatic organisms. The second one is 1.02mm thick and non-toxic, with at least 20-30 years guarantee. The brand I got is Firestone.

We also have the toxic roof stuff and the non-toxic stuff for use in ponds, etc. The roof stuff is treated with an anti-fungal or something.

If I ever get to build a neighborhood-sized system, I think EPDM-lined wooden beds would be the way to go, but of course I'd want to cost it out.

I have done some preliminaries and based on a range of issues the liner
is looking good. I will let you know...
Try to establish a cost per 100ltrs.

Steve, I used EPDM for the pond, and PVC for the GB.

Mmm.. dont expect it was damage,
prolly more likely a cut not folded/joined correctly.
or out and out darkside involvement!

That material tape is good stuff, sticky as!
A wayward screw...could be the trouble maker!
