Forgive me if this idea has been discussed previously. I considered several ways to create a visually appealing, consistent pattern of holes in the media guard. Finally, I realized that a sheet of graphing paper taped to the pipe would allow a precise pattern be easily created.

Nat and Sue are pretty neat at drilling media guard holes... But they have probably drilled well over 1000 guards between them...

+1 on the drop saw - if you do short cuts its easier to twist to cut off any errant roots. I'm sure the media will appreciate the view.

Looks neat  We just used Agi pipe for our extension no drilling/cutting, ready to go
