Forgive me if this idea has been discussed previously. I considered several ways to create a visually appealing, consistent pattern of holes in the media guard. Finally, I realized that a sheet of graphing paper taped to the pipe would allow a precise pattern be easily created.

Nat and Sue are pretty neat at drilling media guard holes... But they have probably drilled well over 1000 guards between them... |

+1 on the drop saw - if you do short cuts its easier to twist to cut off any errant roots. I'm sure the media will appreciate the view. |
