Is there ANY possible way these can be used in an AP system? These barrels contained engine oil that would obviously need to be neutralized. Thinking of using them as GBs, obviously rust would be an issue. Can get any number of 200lt ones for 10 bucks each. Cheap cheap.

I suppose if once they were cleaned of oil and if you coated them with bitumen paint they wouldn't rust as quickly :?

Don't know, but they are one use from new, so in excellent nick. Would the liner be a plastic thing that could be taken out?
With bitumen paint Jaymie, does that raise further fish issues, i know nothing about it?

Looks like i need to price bitumen paint. Seems no reason why i can't use them for fish tanks and GBs. Thx for the quick replies.

the liners are quite cheap. Also, unprotected the steel should still last a long time. (and might boost your dissolved iron :)

You might consider cathodic protection using Mg, an essential plant nutrient (basis of chlorophil). A piece of ribbon screwed to the size might suffice (don't try to solder or weld the Mg ;).

so i get teenage daughter to raid the chemistry lab at school for those lil Mg ribbons, hmmmm.

Guess i could buy a few barrels, wash them, treat them differently, see what happens, chuck in a few fish AND TAKE ONE FOR THE TEAM.

Thats the way......:) If no one has tried it, give it a go, see if it works, if it doesn't then you save everyone else killing fish trying it..
