Any recommendations for a good garden hose ready chlorine filter for watering my regular garden and topping off the aquaponics tank. Or is it better investing on a canister filter and putting the hose fittings in it?

Your garden probably wont care... and you can use any container.. exposed to sunlight, and/or aerated... to off gas any chlorine for fish tank top ups...

Untreated water top ups for your AP are fine. Ive added 300 odd litres of tap water to my 1500L FT on many occasions without a problem.

if you feel you must then i would think that a canister filter would be cheaper than a hose attachment filter ( never seen one myself)

but like Charlie and Rupe have suggested there are cheaper ways

personally i just make sure that the water jets really hard so that the water bubbles and splashes that is normally enough to get the chlorine to gas off

plus chlorine is normally pretty low in domestic water so it will probably get used up oxidizing the bio film and such as it comes in contact with the tank walls

having said that i did kill about 15 goldfish this year by leaving the tap on all day in the pond.... what a crap birthday that was , having to go to my grandfathers funeral and then coming home and having to perform another one was pretty crap (not to mention the bill for having the water on for about 10hrs)

Cheers
Pete

Oh dude I feel your pain. I left the hose on in my tank a couple months ago and went to work for the day. Came home to a tank full of dead fish. Had 50 goldfish all around 4-5 inches. Figured it was the combination of the chlorine and rapid pH spike that did them in. Sorry to hear about your grandfather.
