IBC's with latex paint residue?

Post subject:  IBC's with latex paint residue?
I have access to some IBC's with latex paint residue in them. Would those be safe to use for grow beds? And if so, how do you recommend cleaning them?

My first GB's and sump had latex in them, two part system. I pressured cleaned and then scrapped as much out as I could. Pressure cleaned again and scrubbed with white vinegar and bicarb soda. A final pressure clean and done, had no problems and there was still dried latex in them.

Generally, they are safe. Potential concerns might include any mildew inhibitors added to the paint or any dyes that could be toxic. However, I think I'd just give them a thorough washing like ccBear said, and you are most likely totally fine.

Hi Sonia, It has been a while since your post and I am wondering if it worked out for you. I also have a couple of IBC's which I would like to use for a new AP system. Mine had Chloroprene inside which I assume is Latex??? Certainly looks like it when it is dry. It left dark stains which seem impossible to clean off. I have tried a high pressure cleaner which removed the soft material but not the dry parts. Anyone any ideas or comments?

Uli, try to find the MSDS from the manufacturer to see if there is any possible toxic residue.

Thanks Hairy Camel and Bodgy. That does not look too good. Totally not what the people said who sold the IBC's ("Fish Safe"). I guess I have to try and scratch every little bit off. :cry:

It might be " fish safe ". But will the fish be safe to eat afterwards? :dontknow:

I wouldn't trust it from the description bodgy gave, I'm guessing he looked up the msds.
I would be taking it back for a refund. If it was a business you purchased it from they have to take it back as it is not fit for purpose .


Mind you if the people who sold it to you did not know you intend eating the fish then it would fit the purpose.

I would try returning it.

No amount of saving $$$ is worth that sort of risk.
