iam just wondering if there is a way of sealing old gutters so that i can use them in a nft system or if some 1 has already tried it. |

Mate, asked a few questions on sealing metals last night. Bitumen paint would seem to be the go. Google 'bitumen paint' and away you go. Look to pay around 5-7 bucks a litre in a 20 litre drum. One litre does one square mt and it is 'food safe.' Jaymie used it to line her monster tank and couple big GBs. Sounds like an interesting idea. My 2 cents. |

bitumen paint is very intelligent, so, not so thick. One coat gives about 1mm thickness on the surface ur applying to. It needs to cure for a while but apparently is quite long lasting. |

Use multiple coats of the paint, it is thick brown/black goop. Buy a new cheap paint brush that can be thrown away when you're finished. Make sure to get the MSDS (Material Data Safety Sheet) for the product you buy, it will also have all the application instructions in it. Will most likely be clean up in water. 10 days curing time for the final coat before adding water. |

i am just thinking of guttering as i think it will be easy to get, cheap and recylcable and hopefully it will be as good as the one where all the plants where on the fence line |

go for it. if its just open guttering then maybe try filling it with gravel or expanded clay to the plants can root onto something. |

Or cover the top with styrene lids (vege boxs), cut holes in the styrene and drop in net pots .... less weight in the gutter.... only the nutrient water.... styrene cover prevents algae growth..... just like nft |

other side of the coin if you go nft style... is you might need to rig up a gravel bucket filter to deal with some of the solids.... |
