Bought a second hand poly 5000l water tank the other day with all intentions of using it as a water tank......... but.
Has any one used one as a fish tank. I probably will cut a bit of height out of it to reduce height and use some where between 3000 - 4000l. Cut a window and mesh in the top to keep little peoples/pets and predators out.
Will this weaken the tank considerably?

Can i say that this forum is a bad influence.
Thanks

Just dont cut the top right off. Cut a window big enough so you can fish around in there but thats about it. :thumbleft:

What I forgot to ask is there any threads with pictures that any one knows of? I did a search for water tank and for some reason there was too many results for water and tank.
Again thanks

You ask and you shall recieve... :D

SnowT did it with a rainwater tank by cutting a couple of pie shaped windows at the top, there are some pics in his thread starting on page 4,

You could possibly cut the top right off but you would need to brace it with a steel ring around the top because they become quite flimsy without the top to hold its structure. But personnaly I like the window idea because you have a free roof for your fishies!

I should mention the search function can be a little finicky but you just need to know how to trick it.

For your example I would search for the word tank* (put the asterix behind it) and then click on 'topic titles only' and display results in topics.

Hope this helps.

Thanks going to "research" the topic.

I agree with Charlie do not cut the top right of. I cut mine down and now realise I should have stuck to my original plan of just taking a section out of the top. Will know later this arvo or in the morning when I put 2200 litres in.

Yeah, can depend a lot on the tank manufacturer. They come in all shapes and sizes and some of them only just have enough plastic in them to hold them together. With those ones cutting anything out can be a worry. Perhaps ask the manufacturer, most are happy to offer an opinion "off the record".
