I have trouble keeping my FT topped up as I only have one hose that lives out the back (AP system is out the front). My solution... a $30 float valve from Bunnings attached to the 19mm poly retic system in my garden bed so at least 2x per week it gets an automatic top up.

I have one that hangs down into my sump so when the water drops down below the bottom level it tops up automatically. Have not had an issue for two years...

Nice.. I've managed to find some all plastic float valves, one from a hydro shop, and another was for an automatic dogs water bowl that the local tank shop uses for cattle troughs.. Just need to get one hooked up..

Can anyone recommend a reliable float valve - just started looking for some for my systems. Seems to be a choice between RO types or stock watering types.

Ideally I'd like one that I could mount though the FT wall high up, and have the float adjusted so that the valve opens when the water gets low enough (that way if a leak develops in the through tank fitting I won't loose much FT water). The RO ones seem to be about 150mm long which is not long enough to cover the fall in water during the F&D cycle. I may have to mod it to extend the float downwards a bit...

These are the two I've found on flea bay:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SET-OF-5-PLA ... 5336492%26

Wanted one with no metal parts - could only find ones with metal arms in B and retic shops. I'll be filling from a top up tank so will only have minimal gravity pressure to work with eg (20 - 100cm head). So I need a valve that will open and close with low working pressures.
Cheers
Matt

Hello mate, all plastic float valves are commonly used in evaporative air coolers. Got mine from a supplier in Welshpool but there are a few around. Threw out heaps last summer too.

Google "Hudson valve". It's a nice all plastic and stainless float valve. Made in California.
