Does the media guard just rest there or is it fastened to the bed somehow?
Sorry... I couldn't find this on a search.

Just the weight of the media holds it in place.

The media guard just sits on the GB floor. Don't fix it in place because you need to turn it every week or so to stop roots growing into the siphon.

Not turn as invert, turn as in twist Helo. Just give them half a turn, or more, every week as a matter of routine maintenance.

oh, I see. I have just been pulling out any roots I see. I look in there all the time, but twisting is a great idea.

I've seen some systems that people sell where they are media guard is glued into position. Bad idea... Even worse, I've seen people that sell systems where the drain is buried in the clay, there is no media guard, you can't see where the drain is and to access it you have to dig the clay out and find it, so you have no idea when the drain is becoming clogged with roots.
