I am helping a friend plan out an aquaponic system. Long story short, here's my question.

Can you guys think of any way to open and close a standpipe drain on a timer?

Basically we want this: open drain-growbeds drain. Closed drain-flood growbeds.

We need some kind of mechanism of any sort that would open and close a standpipe.

Any ideas?

Here's all you need.... an overflow standpipe, with two holes drilled in the bottom... and a timer...

Timer/pump comes on.... floods, and overflows down the standpipe....

Timer/pump goes off... drains through the two holes....

Standard flood & drain... simple as...

Rupert, my friend is trying to avoid turning the pump on and off. He wants it to run 24/7. Because of the set up, we don't want to use siphons either. Its a long story but its safe to say we cannot turn the pimp on and off.

So our last option before we make major changes to the design is to put some sort of timer on the drain. Just seeing if its possible...

Can you/he not run it in constant flood then?

we'd prefer to flood and drain the GBs.
