Just wondering from others experiences what works the best for adhering PVC to blue barrel plastic? I would like the bond to last for a long time obviously.

Was thinking a general acetic cure silicone.... Would sikaflex be better?

The surface is going to be inside my GB's so will be in contact with GB water.

Cheers ^_^

What are you trying to do? Plumb a standpipe? If so, what about a uniseal? Use a holesaw, insert uniseal and push thru pipe. It will be water tight.

i have to agree with arbe, a mechanical seal is best

if you have to use a chemical seal then silcone and sikaflex are probably on a par with each other

Cheers

Thanks guys,

Yeah was plumbing up a male 19mm hose attachment into the bottom of the half-cut blue barrel as the outlet for a loop siphon. I'm surrounding the inlet with a ~60mm (can't remember precise diameter off-hand) PVC standpipe/media guard, so I want to adhere the standpipe to the base as well as make the male outlet watertight.

I've done a fair bit of searching, but have found it hard to determine exactly what combination of parts people tend to use for this application, whether it's a uniseal that couples with the standpipe and is then reduced to allow attachment of 19mm hose, of just the hodge-podge ghetto style combination I'm thinking...

I've read that silicone adhesion will fail after a year or two and may leech, but perhaps this is just paranoia?? I just don't have the experience to know what to do.

Any links to memorable/elaborate solutions/examples of standpipe & loop siphon outlets would be appreciated.

Thanks !

There is a good manual on making an entire aquaponcs system out of blue barrels. I did a quick search but couldn't find it. Perhaps someone knows where it is.

It may give you ideas.

Edit: found link.
