Went on a tour around landscape supply yards today......think I had my first HSM related to AP, asked how much the scoria is, $250 m2 in the yard. Its trucked from Vic, thats close to 2,000K.
So...needless to say I looked at the river gravel, what they called small had nice sized 15 to 30mm stones but also many bigger, say 50 to 70mm. Could that be usable or I need screened stuff ? I'm sure the answer is no...lol.

Damn that is a bit scary Bushy...

I'd go a bit smaller if I was you, the most commonly used expanded clay size is ranging from 8-16mm, it works a treat... I've used pea gravel, blue metal and hydroton, all about this same size and it works well..

The nest size down was pea gravel, but appeared to have a lot of white pebble in it so would have to do a vinegar test I reckon.
Blue metal is my last choice, even tho its cheap but I think it will be harder to work with, and at this time I'm thinking of going with an EPDM liner, and worried about damage.....they can be sharp

Yeah I'm not a huge fan of bluemetal.. We have beautiful round peagravel here in W.A. it's a red/brown bauxite gravel, no pH problems....

Bushy, why not use river gravel on the bottom half and hydroton on the top half, or screen some smaller gravel for use on the top half. Idearly the smaller size would be better through out the system but sometimes you have to use what you can afford.

Did think about that Jorgy, but I'm planning a sizeable setup so will require about 8m2 gravel, so not too keen on manually screening that much. But I will get a price for hydroton locally.
Working on how to wash the gravel using the front end loader.....bit allergic to shoveling that much rock....

I would use a mixture of what you can get cheaply in bulk the top the top 2 inches of bed with smaller or hydroton. I use a 10-15mm river pebble and I find it better than the hydroton as it helps thing stay more solid or stable. I find the hydroton a little bit too light weight.
