The Laguna 1-1/2" click fit adapter that I mentioned on the last page finally arrived. It provides a really neat fitting when coupled with a 40mm faucet socket.



Bung in some 40mm pressure pipe and you're away! I tested my pump in about 6" of water with the 90 degree elbow just under the surface. Absolutely silent, which is great.

Ok I am now looking for high flow pump that has a sole purpose of flowing water through the RFF for solid removal

so far the "Superfish High Flow Pump 50000" is the only pump I can find that moves over 30KL / hr @ 400w
does anyone know of something better ?

head height does not need to be over 3m and I reckon I would be safe saying 2m would be target height

I am going to be cheating a bit

Fish tank is 3m high with solids removal at the bottom feeding into sealed Radial Flow Filter
this will be air tight ( assuming that would still work ?)
because it is sealed the pressure difference for the pump to work will be whatever height it has to pump over the top of the tank wall

what I am hoping to achieve is placing high flow pump on the outlet drawing the filtered water through the RFF back into the main fish tank
and allowing the solids to gravity trickle drain out of the RFF and into mineralization tank then into Greenhouses

this solves the solids problem I am still thinking about the ammonia side ,
should I still have bio filter for processing the pee before returning into the fishtank ?

my problem is needing to move over 600l/minute with 10m head I thought with this way I could get away with lower flow rates when filtering through the Greenhouses

so I am trying to separate Fish Tank loop from Green House loop


Onga 414 125 l/min @ 10m head 200l/min @ 5m head 550watts : 3/4 hp

so instead of running 5x Onga 414 @ 2.8 kw
I was thinking 1x Superfish High Flow Pump 50000 plus 1x Onga 414 = 950 watts

So you are drawing water that has been through the RFF and returning it to the FT before you filter it?

A diagram might be handy to show your proposed layout



The Superfish 50000 flows 45000l @ zero head, and zero at 5.5m head, so flow will be well under 30kl/hour at 3m head.

I am only up to around page 40 of this thread so far

Laguna pumps are peaking my interest
ideally seeking the most efficient pumps between 1-2m head

I will be running the tanks half way most of the time and filling up during spawning seasons
or if I find I need to feed that plants more and run more stock

the filtration gear will all be at the same height as the FT ,
all Greenhouses are below the FT ending about 5m below tanks floor level
I am trying to go closed loop FT and redirecting the solids towards the greenhouses to be mixed with fertilizers
I will still have some form of unrestricted bio filter after RFF and FT to neutralize ammonia etc

for now it looks like the RFF will be multiple screw top barrel's to get the 3m2 surface area needed to run 30kl/hr
just trying to find the widest necked ones I can
40cm wide = .12m2 = 25 barrels = 5000L
I think the largest screw on cap I could find was 70cm wide = 8x barrels but lost that page

Ideally 3x IBC would be great
if I could think of a way to get a baffle inside and keep it sealed ( so I don't have to raise it 2m)

any different from 16000 ?

it seems to be the best bang /L I could find

assuming no issues with their 3 yr warranties ? they say impeller and all , all my pumps in the past this was the first to go every time and that was just normal use in a pond with filters

but does anyone know where to get the charts for the
Laguna MaxDrive Direct Drive Pumps ?

the 1/4 hp 6 impella version MDM Sequence 4000 - 13500lph seems to be the most efficient

Humming Hozelock.
I bought an Aqua Nova Eco 4500 from rockaroundtheblock.com.au and its been performing well, not that I've actually tested it but its doing a good job on my small 2,000 litre system with nearly a metre head. I called them up again recently to order another one as a backup pump but they no longer carry them as supply became completely unreliable. So they recommended a Hozelock Aquaforce 4,000. It was $240 but "built to British Standards", and who could argue with "British Standards" ?
It certainly looked the goods, nice easyclip plastic cover, swivel hose fitting etc etc so I hooked it up with great anticipation, turned it on, the flow was great . . . but the noise, dear me, the backyard was filled with an unpleasant humming which I could hear over about 8 pipes splashing water into 3 tanks and 2 sumps. I was really surprised as I have 2 Laguna's and like the Aqua Nova they are completely silent, so I thought there must be something wrong with it. They sent me out a replacement rotor/impeller unit but no difference, thats just how they are. And the vibration, it felt like a very fine, harsh vibration like an electric toothbrush x 10, I don't know how any fish could stand it, if fish could be driven mad I'm sure this pump would do it. So they took it back, full refund, postage paid, no problem.
So I am very happy with rockaroundtheblock, great customer service and they have some good gear at good prices but if you enjoy your serenity, I wouldn't recommend Hozelock.

Built to (enter your most reliable country of manufacture) usually means they are being made in China. Unfortunately skimping on tolerances and wiring and caps leaves you with a pump you could have got for half maybe more. Only good thing is the named brands will replace, however you are now left with no pump until the replacement arrives. This is fine for say a hairdryer or cooking appliance etc but when lives are on the line (too many silly kids cartoons) you're *frack*.

Yes I should have mentioned, he was up front about it being made in China, just "to British Standards". He claimed that ALL pumps are made in China, just some to higher standards than others. I think I will stick to Laguna from now on, I wonder if they are really made in Italy ?
