Also - have a look at the items on this page - especially the digital controller for heating and cooling.

Ok then :) I love a challenge :) here is a kit for $29 - or the delux version for $79. This must be as cheap as a 12V differential thermostat can get?

http://www.jc-solarhomes.com/MTD/12_vol ... ostat_.htm

There is a demo video of it here:

I have tried to contact this guy but there is no email address that I can find on his home page. I was hoping to get one with a oC calibration rather than oF.

I want to use one of these to run water through a coil in a compost tumbler to heat the water.

Cheers,
Hamish

Hamish ,, Love the idea of getting the heat from the compost . Sorry but it just isn't a go'er. Very small amount of heat and by collecting it you reduce the composting. The cost to pump the water through is probably more than a submersible heater that would give more heat.

I MAY be wrong , if i am please let us know your results.

How about this item to give off the heat into the fish tank - seems a bit small 20cm diameter x 9cm high coil - any ideas if water circulating in a solar hot water system would have enough time going through this coil to dump all its heat into the fish tank? Guess it depends how fast the water is circulating...

That's more like it ....., nice find.
Definately safe with the staino ,, but you need size because staino is not the greatest heat conductor. At that price I may just change my mind about using copper tube.

Cheers

Is it really 50 feet long. I guess it is if that is what it says - pics can be deceiving I guess.

50 feet ,, from an Australian web site SHAME SHAME SHAME.

But GREAT price , so I'll ignore their unusual American measurements:)

There are about 25 rows of coil - so when not pulled out at all that makes it only about 25cm high. On that basis, just doesn't look like the diameter is enough to make it 50 foot. Though running a few calcs - I believe the diameter would only need to be about 20cm to make it 50 foot long having 25 rows. I wonder how heavy it is. Might be tempted to stow one in my luggage home when I make a quick work trip to Melbourne later this month.

or the other option is to get my lazy arse into gear and do something with the 25 metres of straight tube (4 6 metre lengths) that I bought last year. Still not sure exactly how at this stage how I'm going to bend them and connect them to make them the shape I want. I have worked out that I can make a 180 degree bend in them by using a hydraulic bender that I have - with a spring in the tube to stip it collapsing - but it is going to be a major pain in the arse to make enough bends to make the thing usefull. Getting the spring in/out for each bend is going to present some difficulties. I'm tempted to see if I can make the bugger into a coil by running it around a car wheel hub or something :?
