Finally got ours sorted using this thread as the guide...

Brother in law gave me an old UPS the other day & am now thinking I might have a go at running the 12v full time & use the ups as a backup.. Will have to look into it a bit more yet...

Thanks for the thread & all the info guys... :notworthy:

Fantastic Rob.

As always, love your vids and updates.

I see the new fishies are quite active! I tell you what, they are so much more friendly than the ones I have owned over the years. Ive never owned a batch that beg at the water edge for a feed... quite remarkable.

Great work and great vid. :thumbleft:

Well done Bob, I would suggest a couple more air stones.

They never used to be that friendly Charlie, just lately since the water temp has come up.. Sort of worried that I am under feeding them.. Still feeding them the 2mm floating pellets & lettuce now..

Thanks guys..

I was just reading this thread and thought its being a while since I tested my backup system.

It didn't work.

I bought mine from Murray Hallam a couple of years ago so is well out of warranty.

I pulled it apart and found it was only a badly soldered joint.

But just for interest I thought I would take a photo of it and post it here.

what is used is a 12amp 250VAC relay.

It has the advantage that you don't need a 12 volt transformer as you just hook it upto the 240VAC

The disadvantage is that you have to work with 240 volts hence you need to know what you are doing.

Obviously, anything to do with 240 VAC needs to be checked by a qualified electrician before use.

cheers Lou

Thats fine Trout if your an Electrician (or know what your doing) But the whole point of this thread was for people to safely make their own backup without playing with 240V.

Yeah, only electricians should play with 240V.. That doesn't look like it's been built by an electrician either... :dontknow:

Anyone purchased a trickle feed charger recently???
Got any recommendations??

Thanks..

My recommendation is to not use a trickle charger, and use a 3 stage smart charger, with bulk, absorption, and FLOAT stages. The important stage is float, that is what does not kill batteries, as opposed to trickle.

he air pump is a 35w model, which draws around 3.2 Amps. A 100 AH battery will provide around 20 hours of runtime, after which the air supply will keep running, but at a pretty rapidly reducing rate. I'd say 25 hours would be about the max.

Hi Col,

Sorry to be a pain but can you tell me how the conversion is done (amps to AH)?

Shameless self promotion:
http://aquaponics-system.com/189-electrical-formula-for-watts-amps-volts/ Figures out the watts/amps/volts if you have any 2 of the measurements.

G'day guys,

The pump that chainsaw supplied no longer has stock..tried calling...been trying to call all day..no response.

Anyhow, how this alternative on ebay
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/12-volt-Aqua ... 2a23741df8

However it can only do 38LPM, would this be sufficient for my 1000lt IBC?

Thank you in advance!

Cheers

Jimmy
