FNQ power outages - days long - usually due to storms
Many hours long - usually due to ejits with trucks running over/into/thru poles/wires
Hours long can happen a couple of times a year

The GMC ones are sooooo cheap now, you can pick them up for about $150! Its not the sort of thing you'd use very much, so the cheaper ones would do the trick :)

Ok, so more info on the UPS back up pump.

I got roughly 4 hours out of the test.

Concerns:

I've been playing around with it a little more today.

The UPS i got i'm fairly sure is a "stepped sinewave" output AKA "simulated sine wave"

There are ones about that are "true sine wave"
If any one is actually interested in what this means or is i can draw a picture.

Anyway, i noticed that when the UPS switched over, the tone and air output of the pump changed. Things that operate on a magnetic field like these pumps and also AC motors can be very specific about the frequency and waveform of the power supplied to them. The pump always ran hot, but now seems to be running hotter............

The UPS idea may be best shelved for the moment. It would have been nice, but i 'll explore other options....................

What to do with this brand new $95 UPS now  Ebay?

VB, the gennies are around 2000W, so could run anything upto that wattage. Hell, they'd run 8 of muzzas pumps

What about an ac adaptor connected to UPS to run a 6/9/12 volt air/water pump?

Les, might as well just buy the ac/dc air pump from age of aquariums to do that, and you'll be able to add "lantern" batteries to extend the run time :)

S77, i'm not that fussed about the PC shutting down, don't really do anything crucial on it :)

Are you sure about the wattage Steve. 2kva for $150 is pretty good. I thought those GMC things only ran a couple of lights - they are not capable of a fridge or freezer are they. I they were I'd buy one tomorrow (of course I would let everything in the fridge melt rather than let my fish die).

I reckon I will keep this device in preference to the UPS idea.
Just my personal preference.
