Agree with you TC, I think we are getting bogged down on detail tho, if there is to be a name change then fine, there has been some good ideas put forward.

I think we should then write a sticky to explain the different methods of applying a 'venturi drain', incorporating the no holes design and hole in the centre of FT types

We are working on the list of ideas to put forward in a poll. Then we can sticky the explanations for it all. Kinda like we have done with no holes and CHIFT etc.

So here is the list so far.

1) Venturi drain which we kinda started with and I know it is commonly in use for this purpose in Aquaculture. Here is just one of the sites I found mention of it,

The term has also been used in books on aquaculture. They are generally referring to the standpipe type method for this. Downside of this name is that it confuses people since there is something very different that is a venturi.

2) Siphon Overflow Drain -SOD- This one could be confusing since a no holes overflow is technically a siphon overflow or the Over the side overflows in aquarium culture are generally called siphon overflows, They require the hydrostatic pressure of a siphon to function and if they loose that, they fail. The standpipe type or t type of what has been know as a venturi drain does not require the maintinance of this hydrostatic pressure to function.

3) Updraft Overflow-UO- Short, simple descriptive name
4) Uplift Overflow -UO- Short, simple descriptive name

5) Dufflift overflow -DO- Because he wants something named after him

6) Solids Removing Overflow -SRO- descriptive but a bit unwieldy
7) Solids Sucker Overflow -SSO- Unwieldy but more fun.

Constant Height Is Poo Sucker -CHIPS- Ok I just added the Is to get it to spell CHIPS for ELL

9) Bottom Draw Overflow -BDO- Descriptive
10) Bottom Lift Overflow -BLO- Also Descriptive
11) Bottom Uplift Overflow -BUO- again descriptive
12) Up and overflow -U&O- (I personally think this might be more descriptive of the no holes overflows)

13) Solids Lifting Overflow -SLO- Descriptive
14) Bottom Cleaning Overflow-BCO- Also Descriptive

So does anyone else have more ideas to add to the list?

Frank, in the drawing, it would be much easier to talk about particular types of drains if you would number or letter the examples in the drawing seeing as there are different types of drains there with the exact same labels.

There are three different drains called "overflow drain CLIFT" Only one of which will pull solids off the bottom and up to the overflow height.

Then there are Three "siphon overflow drain CLIFT" two of which I see little or no real effective difference from the one "overflow drain CLIFT" that will draw solids from the bottom.

The one diagram that I might add would be the one with the skimmer box on the inside as well as the outside of the tank with the siphon connecting the two as in an Aquarium overflow siphon, or the No Holes overflow.

Thats why I'd suggest a sticky. If, actually when, they ask the question about solids collecting on the tank bottom just refer them to the "Overflow Design" Sticky.



In truth not many of us and certainly not me but thats why we have Steve to refer them to the right place

Personally I like Monk if it can be applied more generally than to just the concrete and boards setup or alternatively CHIPS becuase they are both so obviously terms that mean something when someone asks "what the?" we can just say look at the sticky.

back to subject:
While none of you object to the use of the word when you speak of siphons and autosiphons,
It seems I can convince very few people of maintaining name mainly because it describes what happens.
I must have led a bad campaign.
I have to accept that.

So (unless there would be some silent majority that thinks this word acceptable - now is the time to vote!!!) I will not further defend it. I have given it my best.
I hate rowing against the tide if there is no view of the tide changing.
So I throw out my anchor.

The problem with acronyms is that they are not descriptive by themselves but only become clear if you know the exact meaning of each letter.
That is almost never the case for a newbie.
So acronyms need lots of explaining. Nearly every time. And for nearly every newbie.
And they need remembering. Or a dictionary.
And there are so many of them as acronyms seem to be a trend everywhere.

An OD so far to me has been an Over Dose.
But it could also become an Overflow Drain.
Confusing.

TMHO there is an OD of A's.

I like some humor in language, especially if it is descriptive

So my (second level) vote goes to "Poo Sucker Drain", and its derivatives where needed
and I would suggest not to abbreviate this.
So nobody will need a dictionary to understand.

OOOH man . please can we keep what ever name you all decided on, a simple, relevant reference. I sit in awe most nights and days reading and trying to understand the finer points you genius's are debating over. And most of the time, I give up on the " I am lost" factor, yet again

I'm sorry it is a venturi drain no matter what you wish to call it as it accurately describes what occurs in its action. As the water flows from the bottom of the tank by pressure of the incoming water to the top of the standpipe it at that point sucks in air as the water drains. simple enough

let's just say some of it lacks a bit of finesse

Poo Sucker Drain has that more than any other word so far.
I like it.
