yes, friction force goes up with weight, but so does the force trying to pull it down the hill, by the same % - so failure is independent of weight.

Pine is grippier than steel on concrete! I'm sure it will be fine, but I'd hate for it to be not fine. Part of the reason I say go surfing is that if you're anywhere near the limits, it's possible that static friction is enough to hold it, but kinetic (sliding) friction isn't, so if it gets a bump it might keep moving. If you feel safe standing on it and trying to make it slide, then all will be well.

surface area is not in the equation at all, you'll notice.
Fr = μmg*cos(8.5°)
Fg(down the slope) = mg*sin(8.5°)

so if Fr>Fg, μcos(8.5°)>sin(8.5°), or μ>0.15.
this says steel/steel is around 0.8, and steel/concrete will likely be higher still, so you should be fine. But test it...

yes, I would have a nice big surface area still, for less chance of lateral movement and moments as you said.

Is that a sneaky way of trying to get us there to wash gravel? :wink:

I want to come, but can you send me plane tickets?
I'll wash gravel if you do so.

LOL

Mu

Isnt it the greek letter μ used as the micro prefix and i assume from everybodies cals above the symbol for some friction coefficient?

yup pronounced mew for the bovine obsessed :-)
mu is the coefficient of friction for a particular surface. it can be calculated by the following formula:

F = μN

where N is the normal force, so for friction,

N = ma

where a = 9.8m/s^2
and m = mass of the object.

if you know the friction force (thr force required to make the object move) thne you can calculate μ, however ppl have done that for us and published them in many places. So we can calculate the friction force without using any instruments :-) Which is handy if you don't like doing practical experiments, or were trained at Melbourne University :-D

for the boviniphiles: MOO!!!!
and the oviniphiles: Baaaaa!

And that's it for me, who's probably had too much to drink :-D :-)

you're stretching my memory here, it was only ONE class as a filler maybe 12 years ago, but, isn't there TWO coefficients? one for break traction and one for moving friction?

yeah steem mentioned. they're sorta the sam symbol though. 1 is calculated by the force required to start, the other the force required to maintain movement.
