Back to subject, I'm curious as to the height in the cf system BA stated, 2" I think, is this in a 12" high bed?

But seriously, when you fill pipes with media, there isnt much hope in only having a small amount at the bottom, it always ends up CF, and a high level CF i found.

I agree. It is a pity it went that way. Bio has a very nice looking large system and unlike most of us, appears to be making commercial use of it all.

If we disagree with something a person says, surely there is a better way to express it than derogatory comments? (And yes, it is a lesson I am still trying to learn) For example, asking bio what he thought CF was might have brought out that his view/experience of it is different than what most CF'ers are running. Another example is, asking Charlie just how much poop was in the GB he cleaned out might have led to a discussion on how much is normal in both systems.

If you know whats in the bottom, then it means you are looking through your GB, disturbing the media, so half of your sludge is disturbed and washed away before you even see it.

i bet you havent been running the same bed for 2+ years without disturbing it have you?

Maybe thats wise, but good luck finding a place that will accept you with an attitude like yours.

I just read through this thread and was a bit surprised to see that the CF systems you have seen have around 2 inches of water on the bottom.
I run CF and around 1 inch from the surface (which i thought was about the norm for a CF system) and have never heard of what you were describing (although I am quite the noob so maybe not that strange ).
Also I was confused by why you would say "why bother?' in relation to CF and having the water 1 inch from the surface... i mean doesn't your timed F&D system fill to within and inch or two of your media surface before it drains? and don't you have worms in your bed that like more space than the 2 inches at the bottom? if we didn't flood high we would certainly concentrate the fish waste in a smaller area and reduce the surface area for bacteria to grow on the media since it would be dry? I imagine many of the reasons for F&D water level would be the same for CF? or am i missing something?
Also I think the argument going on between some of you in this thread (and I am deliberately not pointing fingers ) is not highlighting the difference between the commercial system and backyard system... especially how the build up of solids could differ between a commercial system and a backyard one in the relation to fish feeding rates and stocking densities
Anyway.. I like you system Bio and have been following your thread but maybe you are being a little presumptuous with you beliefs about whats best when some of the people giving their opinions on this thread have got a lot of experience both in commercial and backyard setups...
