Yeah but Ebara are made in Italy and I will never buy another one.. We've been selling Chinese aquapro for many years and with some models we've never had one returned, ever. In fact there's only ever been a problem with one of their pump models, and we have had 2-3 of them returned, but we sell a fair few.

The Ebara was an Italian pump.... but the initial ones stocked were made under licence in New Zealand...

The later ones... which seem to be of poor quality... were made under licence in China...

Hi,

My brother has offered me a pump that he is no longer using in his fountain. Its a Davey DC10M which runs at 80l/min. Looks like a neat little number but in the specs below it recommends NOT to be used in fish ponds or aquaculture. I don't see why.

If I run it in my sump with a filter maybe it would only be pumping nice clean water right? I can always put shadecloth or the like over the sump and run the draining water through it as a sieve to protect the pump if needs be but it handles soft solids ok apparently. Don't quite understand the warning in the specs. Any ideas?

I did not look at the link, but most submersible davey pumps are oil filled, hence not suitable to aquaculture. Once the deal leaks, fish die.

Having lurked for a few weeks, this is my first post! I am setting up a system with one 275 gal IBC FT, 4 55 gal barrels cut in half for 8 GBs, and another IBC as the sump. Run as CHIFT PIST. Based on the posts here, I was thinking of going with the Laguna MAX-FLO 1500 (pt-344.) I was thinking that that would be adequate flow, and if it was too much, than I would divert back the excess into the sump to add more aeration. Purchasing the IBCs and barrels was easy as there is not a lot of back and forth about the merrits of one over the other, i just made sure they were food safe. The pump, however, is a little more daunting. I had originally thought to use a 12V bilge pump, as I work for a marine supply company and would get a good price, but I know just how unreliable they are! Am I on the right track?

I think you are on the right track. After my Davey is not safe for aquaculture I too think I have settled on the Laguna but may get the 6000 as I wish to expand up later.

Get a 9000 and you wont regret it. You can bipass water back to the sump to regulate the flow to the fish tank.

I'm not sure which pump the 9000 is. The Pt-344 does 11300 lph in non real world situations, none of the Lagunas list 9000 in any of the specs. As my FT is a 1000L IBC, i assumed that even with tremendous head and massive biofilm, I would still have to bypass water back. As my install is realitvely uncomplicated, head should not be too much of an issue. On this side of the pond Laguna goes by GPH in their titles, so it took me a while to realize OBO was listing the Pt-352 which is called the Maxflo 4200 over here. At this point, I could only dream of having enough space to have a setup to warrant that much flow. So while the pt-352 may be more eficient, it still draws 60 more watts than the pt-344, which incidently I can get for 118.25 USD. That looks like a good price to me. There is a point of diminishing returns when there is already likely to be more than 50% going back to the sump. But I could be wrong, that is why I am here! Did you mean the Maxflo 900? It is only 65 w, and costs 81.25 USD. If that is more than adequate than that would be a no brainer.

Ronmaggi,

The Pump is a Laguna Max-Flo 9000 although there are other sizes. Not sure what it may be called over there, but I just ordered one actually. Better to have too much capacity than too little. It will motivate me to expand my system once I get it established knowing..... I can! :) Just paid approx $300 delivered (Aust.)

Found it, it's the maxflo 2400 here. I was looking at the wrong number on the website. That is more flow still at 100 W. Part number is pt-348. 162.85 USD! That is delivered, as I found it at the little online bookstore named after a rainforest.

It's odd, they have 3 pumps that all pull 100 W. The pt-348, aka maxflow 9000, aka maxflow 2400, is the highest flow at that wattage. I'll definately take the higher flow even though there is no room for me to grow to a larger FT in the future. At least not in my current townhome, and as I bought it very recently, I don't forsee moving anytime soon!

Hi! newbe here. hoping to set up my first system as a Christmas present to myself, I live in the Caribbean so sunshine all year round. So anyways, I am seeking to find out if this pump that I am looking at will work efficiently in an aquaponic system. it is an external pump and going thru the forums I have not seen much if anyone using an external, except for one guy who used an old washing machine that didn't last to long.

Its the Pentax PM45 and here is the link to their site.
