One of the best media for moving beds (and one of the cheapest) is virgin HDPE beads approx .96sg. the only problem with them is their size approx 3-4mm so the outlet to the filter has to be able to stop them getting anywhere else. :) providing the bed is moving slowly they also provide mechanical filtration.
I keep looking at polygeyser filters and trying to work out how to build one; but at the moment that is just a dream. :)

I see what you are saying there, about cleaning with other options, so far its K1!

but this brings up another good question about agitation, I have seen 10$ bubble pucks at the pet store, or would it be enough to drop a tube with random mm holes in it?

I wonder if putting the brushes on a small motor and having them spin a bit would be enough to shake them off?

check out the tesla turbine!

I am not familiar with a bubble puck. It would probably/maybe do. In my aquaculture operation I use ceramic airstones that I get out of the states for a few dollars a piece ($2-4/each) but then again with the company I deal with if I spend $50 dollars or more I get free shipping to Canada. You could use brushes and spin them. Up to you and your imagination. Me personally I use the KISS principal but if you want to make an engineering masterpiece all the power to you ;)

hmmm, what was that company that ships free to Canada? the last place that quoted me wanted 100$ shipping for 100$ media

also how many air stones? do you have them arranged 1 per tank, ie 1 with fish, 1 with biomedia?

I will give brushes a try, in round 2, even thou I'm not really an engineer

The company is called Pentair Aquatic Eco-Systems. It is probably one of the largest aquaculture and aquaponic distributors in the world.

For my trout hatchery, I run one air stone in fish tank and one air stone in my biofilter.
