VB, if the leaves have "blackened off then you've had a "black frost"...

Quote:
A dry freeze with respect to its effects upon vegetation, that is, the internal freezing of vegetation unaccompanied by the protective formation of hoarfrost.

A black frost is always a killing frost, and its name derives from the resulting blackened appearance of affected vegetation.

often a localised effect Nick.....

Bit like a "snap" freeze.... indeed you see a similar affect with "freezer burn" .... or frost-bite :D

It is heaps colder out here than at your place Nick. The lowest I have registered the temp is -4. I reckon that this time it would have been less for sure because things have never been killed so high up off the ground before (killed because of temp alone I'd say, which is what Rupe is probably referring to as a black frost). We do get white frosts and we had these also this week.
