If you want new and possible ideas, perhaps give us a better idea of the capabilities of your 3D printer?

Neural paths I've got plenty of. The problem is their cul de sacic nature. :)

Actually I was talking to a 3d printer guy, and he spoke of people buying "Bootstrap 3d printers" to print all the gears and plastic parts for the 3d printer they actually wanted. His printer was made of printed parts. Other than the stepper motors, some hot bits, and the rails (bought at whatever size you want) the rest can be printed. It's a strange thing watching a plastic gear moving a printhead and printing a replica of the same gear. Makes me want to register .com's and business names like 'replicant" and "cyberdyne systems".

Oddly it also sees me both desperately wanting a 3d printer, and simultaneously desperately wanting to go sit on a riverbank somewhere a very, very long way from everything, and grow salad.

Either way, it's all good.

Butt sure, print me up some more, you can never have too many neural pathways :)

I have used DIY 3D printers for small things but for aquaponics it could work. Just don't expect it to hold pressure or water. Using a commercial printer would work for that part, but you can still get issues with layers separating if the object is small.

The Yabbi ball would work. print it in 2 pieces so it does not waste support material and join together with zip ties or a aquarium safe glue.

I made a cage ball in about 10 minutes. I hope this gives some ideas.

That looks great Rob and is exactly the type of thing I was thinking about.... Quickly modeled and printed out as a proof of concept with time then to test and make adjustments. My friend also said that some care would need to be taken with regards to how things are printed so that layers don't separate.

I am thinking about venturis and airlift parts as I think that these could be fairly useful and maybe relatively simple to design. Have you tried anything like this?

I like to design little things. http://www.thingiverse.com/ROBK636/things

I have not tried anything like a venturi or airlift. Maybe a clamp for the air stone at the bottom of a pipe.

Im a lover :love7: not a fighter :boxing: SV

Good job on the Yabby balls, but the trick is to get the cage spacings right. Too big and they kill themselves trying to escape, too small and they clog up, trap legs or make feeding difficult.

I dont mean to hijack the thread, i too also have a 3d printing business in perth. I have printed car parts, small gearboxes, fancy ornaments etc.

Strength is about 80% the strength of injection formed plastic.

I can also do the 3d modelling.

thanks!

thanks ferozaj, that is good to know.

What applications could you see it being used for then?

My friend has now printed out a 13mm add-on for example that turns a single pipe outflow into 4 different water streams - it is being used to split the water flow to provide more aeration into the tank. The pressure is not so high and so it seems to work well for that.

Are there other applications that 3d printing could work for do you think?
