Nice idea and picture!

attach a tiny neo magnet to the top float (you can get them down to about 5mm) to make easy removal of float assembly if you have to clean the tube if there is any buld up on the side walls.

When you say the tube will not stay clear, do you mean clear as in visibility, or clear as in free from obstruction. The part of the tubing that would need to remain visible should be always above the water level and hopefully dry.

i use the clear tube on some small experimental grow beds, 1/4 vinyl tubing and the poke through connectors i use for my drip irrigation outside.

i modified one to show the true level and it is getting dirty from the gravel, the ones that have the connectors below the top water line stay clear, no algae problems on any though.

simple materials, they havnt ever leaked, pretty tight connect using the small punch tool

Perhaps you could use a bit of split pipe to cover it over.. I can see it growing algae on the inside pretty quickly if it's not covered..
