Can someone give be a simple explanation (a drawing would be great) on how a venturi works. Perhpas I could add a venturi to my water return from my pump to increase aeration also? I had a look on google but I just want to be sure I understand. thanks

Amaca,
in the first diagram, where does the air come in? At the eductor (#3)?

Skygazer,
When water goes through a restriction, it speeds up and the water pressure drops. If the change in speed is enough, the pressure drop can produce suction. nice diagram here:

Yes Steem the air or nay gaz is injected on sucked in through the #3.
This is a very innovative thing that I found out on a environement show.
Maybe someone can adapt it here, I wouldn't mind seeing it working.
The cone is adaptable in all ways, some people put them vertical with the water falling down.

a 20w air pump will be way overkill ... just get a little 3w mouse air pump, would be heaps of air through a small airstone :)

Ama, most of these this either have their capabilities overstated or more prudently ELUDE to their non existant performance.....................

put it this way the pump runnig at my feet now is 6W at 4.5L per minute.........
unless they have designed some serious over unity motor then i'd assume that 0.6W will give you rougly 0.45L per minute................... not worth the postage :)

Crapy useless chinese plastic sticked together then!!!
Like so many things these days.
I can't understand that companies continue transporting from China and back to China for at the least 15 % of the brought product!!
Petrol musn't be expensive enough, or they are trying to heat the planet to get the arctic ice melt and have a shorter route for their boats!!
It was just that i found the concept pretty good, but i'll check for german gear next time.

I like to just run an air line, with a valve, into the intake of my pump. The blades in the pump suck air in and smash the bubbles into super fine bubbles. This is the same method used by protein skimmers except that they have a tall column of water and create a cyclone effect.

gottabe careful with that method dan, you'd be surprised the damage the bubble can to to the impellor after a while ;)

i used a cheap method of drilling a 1.5mm hole in dads bypass pipe from the pump, it sucks in air and shoots it under the water. would have been better if i made a venturi throat for it though. I made a few of these for joel when i was over, from memory i just used two reducers, so the pipe went from large to small and back to large again, drilled the hole slightly to the down side of the throat (something stuck in my mind from trade school about the area of max low pressure being created a certain way down stream) and WOW insta venturi.

just drilling a hole works fine, but is very tempremetal on water flow and stuff like even putting an elbow down stream can turn it froma venturi to water spray :)

Outback. thats exactly what I have in there now. so I may leave it at that, perhaps get another 3W air pump to inject into the return from the sump
