I just looked up that Holman dwvf0242 fitting in your original post. If I wanted a 50mm tank fitting for a vertical pipe, I'd go with something like this with quality seals and male/female threads each end. I'm using one on my remote blue barrel siphon.

standard solution is a 40mm Drain to waste (eg a common plughole thats in your bath) for fitting to growbeds. Can be bought from bunnings etc - make sure you get plastics ones though rather than stainless fixed grid designs.

Can screw 40mm drain lines on to thread and insert 32/25mm adapter for standpipe, then fit bell housing round that if you want to go the siphon route (rather than timed flood and drain)

How do you attach a pipe to the top side of the drain to waste?

Heres the plastic one

and the standpipe that neatly fits into it (interference fit) - now understand the question - this is how you fit to the 'top side'

I have 40mm standpipes into bog standard 50mm bath wastes for my IBC GB's, they are enough to move a lot of water. The bath wastes I got were $6-7 from Reece, have a stainless steel top but a removable plastic grate. Either is fine as long as you can remove the grate, otherwise you'll have to snip it out (just extra work).

For the initial GB's I used a reducing coupler (40mm to 25mm from memory), but I'm not going to bother with my new GB's as the 40mm pipe fits just fine in the bath waste.

That's a very neat, affordable solution. Provided 40mm suits your needs. With some more googling I found the threaded 40mm tank fitting for $15. The 50mm one isn't a lot more.

Azira! I was looking at those today!!!

But the Bunnings guy who was helping me was "dubious" and I had all three kids with me so I gave up on the idea.

Thanks. I'm totally going to go buy some bath wastes tomorrow

Hey Mattyoga! I tried to buy these from Bunnings but the only wastes they had were held together by a central screw attached to the strainer... Am I looking at the wrong thing or is there some kind of work around?

Try a different plumbing store, I couldn't find the right ones at Bunnings either. I got mine from Reece but other plumbing stores would most likely have them. They look pretty much the same as the ones Bunnings has, except no center screw and has a removable grill insert thing. Mine happened to have a stainless steel top but you can get all plastic ones too.

Something like this, you can see the plastic grill thing is removable.

While you're at it, dont forget to search for "syphon (siphon in the US) problems", "help my syphon doesn't work" etc. I think there are more syphon not working threads on here than anything else ;)

I use 25mm standpipes on timed F&D, with no problems- only thing that needs watching is for roots clogging it up- I check every few months, which just takes a few minutes.

They may not have got colour or fertiliser but I suspect the Yanks have siphon winning on these threads.
Even Joel (EB) spelt it that way in the BYAP comparison thread ;-)

we will hold out over gallons and inches though.......

But yep +1 to syphon, it returns 1858 matches.

Haha lol. I'm half American (don't ask me which half!) so I could go either way...

Hey Mattyoga! I've installed my drains and am just about ready to cut stand pipes. The only question I have is that the drain seems to "just" fit a 32mm pipe so I'm guessing a 25mm pipe would be way too loose in the fitting.

Have I done something wrong or is it ok to have 32mm standpipes?

This is the drain waste fitting:

This is the 32mm pipe inserted:
