Fine sand will be OK for a test but many of the solids in the water your going to be filtering are closer to neutrally buoyant. You could also use fishing line to secure the wire and it might be easier to work with. Another option might be to just use silicone along the edges of the mesh where it contacts the fans plastic rim.
