I'm going to use these...

280mm x 125mm x 4mm acrylic (my GB's are only 250mm deep)

Will put an inverted saucer over the top to stop the light getting in.

$9 ea from K-mart

I'm assuming that drilled / sanded acrylic is safe?

you might want bigger holes than that in the outer standpipe, or more of them

Not sure about the safeness - you'd assume they'd be okay given that they are made for serving water??? the UV may be an issue - but if as you say you can stop it from getting in then all might be good.

Instead of the inverted saucer, you could simply spray paint the lid with black or some other opaque paint. Really a nice idea.

I still use pvc pipe with holes in it. Quick, easy and very cheap.

Nice Scott, you might look at putting more holes in, especially around the base, as the water level drops the upper holes will not be covered (or let in water  )

I agree. Or instead of holes , I used my saw to make horizontal cuts in the pipe that went about a quarter of the way through.

how about using some of those 10 or 20L food grade buckets that are used. They are relatively cheap and should be fine, just cut a hole in the bottom.
