Joyce - as we both know, those troughs can't support the weight of the gravel very well. I was actually thinking of switching to perlite. I can get 6 cubic feet (44 gallons) for $17. For the 10 foot feed bunk it would take 3 bags to fill, so not too too bad. But EB mentioned Perlite breaking down. EB can you explain your experience with Perlite a little more plz?
