the red (call them strawberry cups here too) ones i have found to last for a while. I have had a dozen or so sitting in a foam raft in water for prob 12 months now. But then i haven't had roots growing in them to comprimise their integrity (the lettuces germinated and died off, and just been sitting there for the fish to hide under...)

i go for the cheap ones i want to try just holding the stems with sponge rubber or those rock wool blocks

Here's a cost saving tip folks...... the little black "lettuce" pots will usually only fit about 50mm holes.... usually they're about 42mm internal diametre tapering to 25mm - about 50mm deep....

The strawberry ones are more suited to a 75/80mm hole....

As VB said there are available small (green) pots that come in up to blocks of 50 that can be bought really cheaply (just tear off what's needed) and are a little bit deeper than the black lettuce pots.

Like these ...

http://www.accenthydroponics.com/ecom1/prod1070.htm

But unlike the lettuce pot which has "slits" from top to bottom the green tear off pots usually only have four drainage holes on the bottom....

To get the nutrients up to the plant the best idea is to use "rockwool" as F&F suggests....

But don't buy the rockwool cubes... if you do then there's no sense in using the pots, and secondly it works out too expensive....

The best way of using the little pots is to use a rockwool product called "floc".... which is a loose rockwool product a bit like insulation fibre or loose bats....

Just pinch off enough to fill the pot to the appropriate level and place your seed in.....

"Floc" can be purchased in bags/bales at really low cost...about $50 for an 80ltr bag

i.e Growool PREMIUM FLOC 12.5kg Bag $65
