Or a discharge on the floor?

My father was a heavy equipment mechanic and he told me the same and I beleived it until I thought about how that could be. Then I boldly tried it out. No effect and no problem. I showed him and he said someone told him years before and he beleived them.....and so it goes, as Steve said.

Doug, You think our wives might be right.....nahhh.....just a thought :D 8)

I'm always surprised that the completely idiotic things that people believe without checking. That's why I always check people's claims (and they're often wrong ;).

hay I’m an ex pc teck and just to let u all know a UPS unit is only designed to run your computer during SMALL power fluctuations 1-10 seconds they will run longer but are not designed to if the power is out for any length of time they are meant to shut your pc down safely (not run a pump for half an hour)

Put a dollar amount on what your system is worth, (cost to restock fish ect) to you and get a generator

Just tried running my air pump on a 600va PC UPS until it quit. The air pump is 85 watts. It quit in 20 minutes. The UPS is not new, so the batteries are probably not perfect. I was please that this UPS held 108vac until it stopped. It would not be good for my pump if it kept trying with some much lower voltage.

I use an inverter with golf cart batteries for only the necessary pump. Later, the computer will duty cycle the pump so it should last much longer. Running full time, my pump runs for 11 hours now, expect 22-24 hours when the computer is controlling.

i was just wondering if you could use an air comressor to store air to be deliverd to the fish tanks if the event of a power failure ??

i.e the compressor fills its reciver when power is on then when it fails you have a slow regulated feed into the water

any thoughts ??

make sure you have an oil trap on the air line to the tank. It should give a few hours of protection depending of course on the size of the compresor.

thanks monya that was the sorta info i was after, a cheap air comresser from the B store is around a $100 IRC.
if the tank lasts long enough it could be worth looking into, though i suspect the fittings would be pricy

hmmm good to know though

There was a lot of info written about air compressors etc as backup systems, have a look under the hardware section

my uncle got one of the B specials................tested it then packed it away, opened it a few months later and plugged it in............no go! Then he realised that it was still holding a full charge from when he tested it!

So really, the only time it will fire up is if you have leaking fittings!

....that was the other point brought up when the idea was mooted, if the power is out, the compressor won't be starting up in the night (not unless the power comes back on again), that is the reason it got shelved I think

How are you going to swich over to stored air in a power failure if you are going to use compressed air all the time then a b compressor will run 2 air stones for about 10 min and the cost of it coming on every 10 min you mayas well go and buy a small genny then you can run air and water for as long as there is petrol as a stand by get one of those aquariam setups with a battery back up about $85

der! silly me!

didn't we float an option of having a solenoid on the O/P so that in event of power out it would start supplying air (until the res empties)
