Miss Piggy .. re fish purchases...

Are you aware that NSW main fisheries/aquaculture research facilities and NSW biggest "commercial" fish farm/aquaponic facility are both in or around Port Stevens??

Tailor Made does mainly Barramundi, but I believe has been growing fingerlings for Silver and Jade Perch...

Or the fisheries research centre might do some for you.... lot closer than Wagga....

Failing that check out the Livefish offer on the forum home page... includes a further 10% discount and free delivery

Yes the grow beds and tank are new. Got them made by a local guy who makes the tanks in his backyard. Not cheap though. Had the fish tank lined like rainwater tanks but didn't bother with the grow beds as it added something like another $200 to the cost already. They cost about $600-700 from memory.

As far as the NSW fisheries research centre goes, unfortunately I tried that option but was told that they don't sell fingerlings but on their website is a great list of all the growers of various aquaculture species in NSW.

I just tried to add the pdf file to this post but I got the message 'the extension pdf is not allowed'. Anyway, its on the website.

The reason why I was looking at getting them from wagga is that an Agriculture teacher from the local school had used Murray Darling Fisheries before and got good stock. He used someone else recently (presuming someone closer or cheaper) and had a terrible time with disease they introduced. He would't tell me who they were though.

Will post some photos soon.......................................................

The outlets on my bio-filters are several inches from the bottom of the drum. It's the same with my gravel/expanded clay grow bed.....the outlet is in the side rather than the bottom of the bed. In both cases, there is always some water left in the container.

When I clean out a bio-filter, I simply turn the drum to allow me to put a bucket under the outflow and tilt it until all of the sediment runs out of the water space that is normally below the outflow.

I've noticed that, as fine as it is, the sediment settles out very quickly once the water becomes still.

I wonder if the solution may not be to locate the entry/exit line in the side of the tank rather than in the bottom......leaving somewhere for the sediment to gravitate out. A drain installed in the bottom of the tank would then allow period removal of surplus sediment by flooding it up and then dumping it straight onto a garden bed or (better still) into your worm beds.

sorry to go back but i think this need a second look this sound like a marvelous idea for those of us running a gravel filled grow bed. Unless that would cause some problems with stagnant water?
