I'm a novice, setting up for the first time. I have a 55 gal cut in half the long way as a grow bed. I just got another 55 gal barrel and I'm wondering if it's okay to cut the top off and use that as my FT. I've also need people cut a window in the side and lay them down on their side. This seems okay, but there are 2 ports on the side that have screw caps in them and I'm worried that over time, it might start to leak. Plus, putting the barrel upright saves more space.

So, is having the 55 gal barrel upright okay? Or does is storing the fish in water that is vertical not as good as having the barrel down on it's side? If the latter, do I need to do anthing to make sure the plugs on the top of the barrel lid don't leak overtime?

I cant see any problem with with having the barrel vertical, but if you were to cut horizontally, id do it this way to avoid problems with the screw caps.
