Can i make this with the following.

1. 25mm bulkhead
2. 25-40mm adapter
3. 50mm pressure pipe
4. 80mm pressure pipe (anyone know where i can get 1m lengths of this or 100mm pressure pipe?)

Will it work well or do i need to go for the bigger inner tube?

You could, but using a 25/40mm reducer on top of your siphon tube leaves very little clearnce in a 50mm bell pipe, which may constrict the flow and stop your siphon from working properly. I would use at least a 65 or 75mm diameter Bell tube for the required clearance to be safe, and then use at least a 100mm diameter media guard pipe.
You don't really need pressure pipe for this application, stormwater pipe is just as effective and much cheaper and easier to get.

Thanks Decal, i saw that video previously. Problem is what to hold back the media. I dont really want to use storm water pipe as i have pressure pipe for everything else. Been thinking about Affnan's brick idea but that would reduce the GB room a bit.

You can use just about any thing to hold the media back with, plastic buckets with the bottom cut out is a good cheap option. Just need to think out side the box a little and look at things a little different.

Good luck and look forward to seeing what you have come up with.

In the video I have used a large bottle, I now mostly use the taller and thinner water bottles which fit better in the PVC pipes.
