I love it when people get passionate about aquaponics... and I admire the motivations of NGO's...

But I hate it when people make grandeious claims and don't have sufficient knowledge and experience to back it...

Quote:
Earlier this year, SSE and a group of volunteers set up a tank in the village of Kisayip in Nigeria that’s providing jobs and thousands of pounds of catfish and produce annually to the villagers

Here's a pic of the Nigerian system... a solar powered floating raft concept with 225 plants...

Sorry, but while it might be giving some learning opportunities to the locals.... it wont produce "thousands of pounds of catfish and produce annually"...

And the company backing the project.... doesn't even have an actual system yet... and is out hawking their expertise... products, both home and commercial... and running courses...

Quote:
I think every Urban Harvest unit could employ a couple people. We’d design them to be portable and expandable. Imagine if we could find 14 locations around the city – that’s 28 jobs. It takes about six months to harvest the fish and produce. With six tanks in each unit, you could stagger the launch so you had fish and produce to sell each month.

What kind of response has the proto-type gotten?

There’s a huge market of people who like the idea of a social enterprise that creates jobs and provides organic products.

There’s both a commercial and residential market for this. We don’t have any customers signed up, but we’d had a lot tell us: When you’re up and running, we’ll buy from you.
What are the next steps?

The companies timber built and lined system... in construction... includes a fish tank on the bottom, and two grow beds above...

It all sounds very familiar... and sadly depressing...

Oh that just doesn't sit right with me..... The biznistry side of things more than the aquaponics.. The aquaponics in third world thing has been discussed and tried a few times , I wish people would look at existing and previous examples rather than hearing an idea and deciding that they are going to do some fantastic new endeavour to feed the poor.. It does not work well in third world countries, people have tried it before.

Hmmm, the Biznistry side of things? Well, I guess some people have been doing it for a little while, now they have named it... And trademarked it... Yeah... Just lost for words on that one..... :crazy3:
