The wifi modules on the market are not reliable enough for something as critical as pump operation. I've tried both the CC3000 modules and the official arduino wifi shield and both have lockup/dropped connection issues. There are elaborate timeout and reset sketches out there but they involve having a custom script living on a server somewhere.

As for the other questions, look a my arduino controller thread.

It will work, arduino's are pretty reliable.

I'd agree with Chiu, I wouldn't risk the timer on a wifi connection (drop outs, unreliable), the normal through arduino will work, but 12v water pumps aren't the most efficient or reliable/cheapest. A smaller AC pump, 24/7 is a better idea if you haven't purchased already.

There are tutorials for each individual parts online, you just need to pull them all into one sketch (and do some research/youtube vids on arduino).

My pumps on solar so it doesn't really matter if it is not that efficient I think I will drop the pump control idea I want to be able to monitor my system when I go away and there is no way I can get an Ethernet cable to where my system is

Ther are many other options that can be very reliable.

Wifi bridge
Power line ethernet
HomePNA

I saw this article the other day:

https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/internet-datalogging-with-arduino-and-xbee-wifi

Had no idea xbee made a wifi module. Might be worth a try . . .
