I'm pretty sure the coil in my induction charged toothbrush isn't 1500km long ;) The efficiency is no doubt terrible even though the gap is small.

Nope, because the frequency that it's switching at is hundreds of kHz or even a couple MHz.. also they're using resonant tank circuits and not antennas :) It's mutual inductance so the coupling between the two and therefore the transmission of power has to do with the physical distance..

Cheers KS

Not all of these systems are wireless because some use cables but this technology is proven and is being re investigated for the local transmission of power in Australia to get around some of the power distribution regulations.

I'm tempted to wirelessly borrow some ambient electricity via a coil under some big power lines nearby.

Does that count? :)

You'd need essentially an antenna at 50Hz, something that would resonate at the same frequency so you could couple energy out. Keep in mind that it would be LARGE. The wavelength at 50Hz is 6000000 meters. Yep, you read it right, 6 million. Or, 6000 km.

So you'd need a quarter wavelength of that, effectively. Or a resonant network that would take up your whole property..

Also, utilities monitor current flow in the lines for fault detection.. one thing you would do is make them all run around looking for what keeps setting off their fault alarms :D :D

Almost sounds worth the effort..

I'd be keen to test the law regarding BIG POWER clagging up my passive copper collector.

I'm talking to my lawyers because the power lines are messing with my 6000km electric guitar that powers my house.

Either they accept my music, or keep their fascist ideas to themselves :)
