I got hold of him by creating a temporary email address and posting it on my blog asking him to contact me :)

Definitely not !!
The best way to learn anything is to jump right in!
I mean its always good to have the theory, but if you jump right into a project, as long as your persistence is greater than the complexity of the project you will come out a winner!
My problem is if it gets too hard I give up, but you don't seem to have that weakness Bullwinkle!

If you get into a project like this, your brain automatically accepts it has to learn something about transistors, current and voltage, LEDs, programming, PCB layout. So your learning rate is much faster than if you first just learn about how to turn a LED on and off, then learn how to program, etc etc...
