One thing to be aware of - you need to have battery for your phone to send and most batteries in phones/laptops etc will fail sooner rather than later unless you regularly cycle them. Put the charger on a timer so that for (say) 6 hours it gives no power and the phone is on battery, then the charger kicks in for (say) 2 hours to recharge.

Test your phone - ideally you want to take it down below 70% or even more on a regular basis to keep the battery healthy.

When they DO go bad, what you get is it runs for x amount of time then it fails to dead in no time at all.

If you buy a game/3g module you can just incorporate that into a PDB. No battery needed

Is there a form of sim card that is used in things like alarm systems that might never actually place a call in the life of the product?

Perhaps a single use thing that one could buy for $10 that would give you $1 of call credit but that would last for ever.

If so what is it called, and where do I find it.

The closest thing I can find is Vodaphones $30 - 365 day prepaid.
