Post subject:  Locked mobile phones

Just wondering if anyone here may have the answer to this perhaps...?

Carl has one of our work mobile phones that's on Vodafone, originally it was on a plan but the plan was finished about 3-4 months ago. Now I know the hardware (actual phone), about 6 months ago would not work with a telstra sim card, it was locked to vodaphone..

So now it's all finished and paid for and all, can I port his number over to telstra, put a new sim card in and have it work in the phone? Or is the hardware permanently locked onto vodafone?

Anyone done anything like this before?

Personally I don;t think I'd trust what vodafone tells me.. I rang Telstra but the guy seemed a little confused, and thought that vodafone should be able to unlock it for free after maybe 6-12 months if I ask them to? :dontknow:

Technically yes, but you'll go insane (possibly violently) before you actually achieve it.

Have tried it with a Vodaphone to Telstra and a Telstra to 3, both times assured it wouldn't be a problem !

Can do it online on vodaphones site.
Depending on plan, contract and time since brought the fee varies but ranges from free or 25$ is most likely in your scenario.

Plenty of places advertise that they can unlock phones, most hock shops do it, but it depends on the model.

I have a Motorola Razor that's a bit beaten up, my sister gave me a near new Razor that she only used for a few months before getting an i-phone. By the time she gave it to me it was out of contract, but still locked (Optus I think), I took it to a number of places and they all said that model couldn't be unlocked, and there are a number of others that can't be unlocked as well.

From memory they charge about $30 for unlocking, but some places quoted up to $60.

Cheers.

Yes, used the online method with a nokia prepaid and it worked. Did check before that the new sim would not work in it until I had unlocked it.

I've always bought my phones outright, so there wouldn't be a problem. I should point out that I use a prepaid plan for people with no friends. I can recommend the Nokia 3720 - water, shock and dust resistant and can come in a fetching yellow colour so I can find it. I've already dropped it in the dog water bowl, so I've tested the water resistant part. Very useful for AP. (No, I didn't get paid for this ad)

I went through an internet unlock service. They just kept my 6$ and did nothing :)
