http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquaponics Like a lot of AP people I first heard and read about AP on the S&S email list. Does anyone else think it's not right that S&S is not mentioned at all in the article, at least in the N. America section? |

S and S is where I first heard of aquaponics on the internet. I gotta agree with you Dave, it should be mentioned. How do we make it so? |

Tom and Paula Speraneo ran a gravel bed flood and drain system in Missouri, and were largely responsible for promoting that type of system, and AP in general through an email list. The BYAP systems are basically the same setup. Tom died and Paula kept the list open afterwards, but if you're using a flood and drain-based setup with pumps in the sump and fish tank then that's where it comes from, history-wise. Tom Speraneo apparently was inspired by the NCSU setup prior, but I think they should get some credit in the article. I have yet to make a floating raft system, for example and that style is described prominently in the article. This article does a much better job IMO: http://attra.ncat.org/attra-pub/aquaponic.html |

I guess I have heard them mentioned around here, but otherwise have never heard of them. As far as i know, anyone can edit the wiki and add information as long as it is verifiable. |

Yes, I'm afraid that wikipedia gets hijacked by people with commercial or personal interests who try to add their own interests and delete others information... I made a few edits and additions early on (nothing about myself or BYAP) but then people get in there and rewrite everything, then a week later all they have done is changed again... I gave up ever changing anything on there again... People trying to write their own versions of history I guess... And trying to get their own vested interests listed. I see Cody from diy aquaponics has recently been on there and posted a fair bit, but then I thought he died a year or two ago... Some of those changes he has made are rather poor too..I agree that Steve Diver's article on AP is probably the best basic run down of AP.... |

Yep, I guess if you're not active today then your contribution gets erased, over time. It's a shame, the S&S list was there when the Internet was young and so it was very influential on moving AP forward. To me it was a prototype for this forum, BYAP was (is) a big improvement over an email list (pictures and everything!) but the S&S email list was the place to be for its time. FWIW here's a link to the list archive: http://www.i55mall.com/aquaponics/ |

Oh yeah.... I spent many, many hours on there in the early days, there were some extremely helpful people and without the help from the S&S listserve I would never have started and this forum wouldn't exist... Searching through the listserve archives was a huge help... I guess it then becomes our responsibility to ensure their contribution doesn't get forgotten DD... I push them in my book, and talk about them on the website, and have sung their praises many times here on the forum. At least in these places things are under my control and they will remain there, where as the Wiki is rewritten daily... You have people there that have barely heard about aquaponics 12-18 months ago trying to push their barrow to give themselves some form of hollow credibility, or just to push traffic to their sites.. |
