World needs food system overhaul

I dont agree with the need to use GM food and I dont think they know about aquaponics. Perhaps we could point the leader of the study, Professor John Beddington, to this site.

I agree governments should reduce subsidies....I disagree with pretty much the rest of it - especially the part about my government changing my diet!

It's all very well meaning... and nothing that hasn't been raised/researched/discussed before....

But world hunger isn't really a matter of food production... it's a matter of distribution... and the politics of trade and business....

Many countries... particularly the bastion of "free trade"... the US.... subsidise farmers to either grow, or dump food and livestock... to manipulate supply and demand... thus pricing...

And gloablisation and international political stratagies aint going to change that scenario....

yea, what Rupe said.

Always gets me when people insist that organic and intensive gardening methods can't feed the world. Well the industrial methods aren't doing it either, instead they are tending to make at least the Americans FAT by getting us to pay for and eat more calories that we don't need instead of using them to feed the people who do need them.

World needs a lower population, less people = less land needed for food/resource production = more of the natural environment left intact = healthier more sustainable planet.

Just about every major problem this planet faces can be traced back the current plague of Homo sapiens.

Developing nations need education and developed nations need to unshackle them selves from the population growth = economic growth mantra, economically speaking we need to think out side the box for sustainable solutions.

I agree with you all.
Here in thailand, my country produce much of food.
But now food become more expensive.
Dry season become longer, lack of water and some time too much water,flood.
Land become more expensive.

I think AP is the future for this country too.

Totally agree
Increasing food production was part of the cause of the problem.
The "Green Revolution" code for industrialised cheap oil dependant agriculture started all this.

Localising organic food production is the only sustainable solution and area can only support the amount of people it can feed.
We will need to return to about 2 billion people and start again.
How is the difficult part.
Under the current model the ability to pay the high food prices and the size of your army will decide who eats.
The inevitable rise in oil price and potential food and land being used to produce bio-diesel will speed up this process.
Along with diminishing reliable water supplies and predictable climates.
