I work in the industry so if your interested or need any help im more than happy to answer any questions. I know that most guys here live out in the sticks  but it doesnt mean you have to pay telstra lots and lots of money.Just as an example with my voip plan, you could call anywhere in Aus for like $0.10 / $0.12/m for mobiles charged by the second. Seeing as im new here i might as well contribute

Opps and VOIP is Voice over internet protocol. You will need a internet connection and either ring from the computer or ring from a phone with a analogue telephone adapter. |

been using the "S" one for a few years $6 a month unlimited Australian land line calls. I have a hands free hand set that plugs into usb and looks like a real phone($70 Aldi) I ring interstate and even next town all the time would cost me a fortune with telstra. I don't call mobiles just sms downside is it wants to charge you for 1800 and 1300 numbers so I use a land line for those. about $2 a month. You can pay more and include OS numbers and mobiles I dont need too just put in a few bucks into the phone account if I need to do that occasionally. |

Sounds good, but we are way behind the times here I think. My freind in America uses Vonage and pays $25 p/m, she can talk anywhere in the world for as long as she likes as long as it's on a land line

Yes I agree with gnash. Australia is way behind... My parents in Singapore pay less money for faster and unlimited internet... Anyways, a question for Zman, do you know if it is possible to have a back to base alarm monitoring dialling through voip? I am only keeping the landline because I have back to base monitoring and most alarm/security companies I speak to, when you say voip, they say "what's that?" then I say "Never mind."... |

I am naked and it's pretty darn good. Though I hear these days that line rental is ridiculously cheap anyway. Bought a locked VOIP phone off the net and then re-flashed it so it's no longer locked =) |

They say that if you have health problems etc then you shouldn't get voip because it is inherently less reliable than the phone network. i.e. your $200 modem can drop the internet connection and you can't dial 000! Likewise with a power outage. So I assume the same "theory" would apply to back to base monitoring for important things like security. 'course they could just do that over the mobile network which is also very reliable. |

It does work as its just a normal call but as gemmell has pointed to is that its not as fall proof as a PSTN line. Say if they cut the power the security system would effectively be down

The problem is that its a shared connection. The more people that sign up the slower your connection is going to be  Let me know if you want the admin login for your vividwireless modem to allow you to use voip with other companies (not engine lol)

All my phonecalls are via my mobile. Havent looked at voip...being too lazy. Is the modem password different to the standard admin123? |

Most alarms are still using contact ID communication format the relies on tight timing and DTMF tone reproduction. We spent months and $ trying to get a couple thousand units going through a Cisco system for one client. We have even been having issues with some clients swapping their lines to phone companies like Macquarie Telecom etc that use a VOIP backbone and having comms issues. As for the NBN, well its going to be interesting... NBN obsoletes a million security systems: ASIAL The smart companies are heavily researching IP/GPRS based addon units but its the matter of finding a monitoring center with a compatible receiver and that does not want to charge 3 times the usual monitoring fee for a dialer. |

I have never heard of VividWireless though. Who do they use for their towers? Optus or Telstra? Because if it is not either of those then it is practically useless outside a major city. |
